Timothy Treadwell was an American environmentalist, bear enthusiast, and documentary filmmaker. He gained fame for his controversial activities, in which he would camp in designated bear-populated areas of Alaska for months at a time, without any kind of weapons to defend himself.
On October 6, 2003, Treadwell's remains, along with those of his girlfriend Amie Huguenard, were discovered in Katmai National Park by the pilot of a National Park Service helicopter sent to retrieve them. They had been killed and partially eaten by a grizzly bear.
A documentary film titled "Grizzly Man", directed by Werner Herzog, was released in 2005. The film included footage from Treadwell's own video camera, which documented his time living among the bears.
The film received critical acclaim and was praised for its exploration of the complex personality of Treadwell and the dangers inherent in his chosen lifestyle. Some criticized the film for glorifying Treadwell's behavior and for the ethical questions regarding the use of his footage after his death.
